Overview

An all‑boys, all‑boarding college‑preparatory school for 180 boys, Blue Ridge School has a 751-acre campus lying along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains 20 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia. The campus is removed from distractions, allowing students to focus on academics, further develop character, build self‑esteem, and progress toward a successful life of service.

Job Summary

This Housekeeper position is a full‑time role, primarily on weekdays from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with flexibility required for occasional afternoon, weekend coverage, summer camp season, and special events. The Housekeeping team maintains cleanliness of student dormitories (180 students), 180,000 square foot of academic and administrative office space, the Health Center, Battle House, Library, Chapel, and Student Center.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent, preferred.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment; lifting or moving heavy items required.
• Comfort with deep cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting high‑traffic areas.
• Must be able to stand for long periods, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
• Must work safely around strong chemical cleaning solutions and know how to use them appropriately.
• Must be able to set up and work on ladders up to 12' tall.
• Must safely operate cleaning equipment such as a floor stripper and power washer.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule for special events and summer camps, as needed.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate commercial washers and dryers to wash, dry, and fold all student laundry.
• Sweep, dust, vacuum, mop, scrub, and disinfect assigned areas of the campus daily, including classrooms, hallways, dorm rooms, offices, and bathrooms.
• Clean windows and light fixtures from a ladder periodically.
• Strip and wax floors using electric equipment periodically.
• Respond to minor emergencies, such as spills, when needed.
• Communicate with supervisor regularly throughout the day.
• Work with the housekeeping team to cover all areas of the school in the absence of co‑workers.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting and carrying (up to 50 lb.), pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job requires continuous movement during work hours and is performed under moderate to severe temperature variations with moderate exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Necessary personal protection equipment (PPE) will be provided.
