Job summary

The Pennington School in Pennington, NJ seeks a dependable Housekeeper to join the Operations team. You will maintain cleanliness across campus buildings, assist with event setups, and help ensure a safe, welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The role requires 3+ years of housekeeping experience, the ability to lift 25 pounds, and flexibility for overtime including weekends and school breaks.

The position offers regular hours 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine daily cleaning of campus buildings (offices, classrooms, dormitories, athletics facilities).
• Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms; vacuum carpets; clean glass and surfaces.
• Sweep, mop, and maintain floors; deep cleaning during breaks.
• Collect and dispose of trash and recycling; dust and polish furniture.
• Assist with event setups and other campus needs; support Operations team.

Job description

Housekeeper

The Pennington School seeks a dependable and service-oriented Housekeeper to join the Operations team. Reporting to the Custodial Supervisor, the Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, safety, and efficiency throughout the School's buildings and campus. The successful candidate will take pride in their work, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, and work effectively with a diverse school community.

Essential Responsibilities

• Perform routine daily cleaning of campus buildings, including offices, classrooms, dormitories, and athletics facilities
• Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms
• Vacuum carpets and perform carpet-spotting as needed
• Clean glass, windows, and other assigned surfaces
• Sweep, mop, strip, and wax floors as needed, including during school breaks
• Collect and dispose of trash and single-stream recycling
• Dust and polish furniture
• Clean, dust furniture, fixtures, blinds, offices, classrooms, and other assigned spaces
• Deep cleaning during school breaks, including dorm rooms, offices, residential units, and common areas
• Assist with event setups and other campus needs as assigned
• Perform additional duties as needed to support the Operations team

Essential Qualifications

• Three-plus years of experience in a housekeeping or custodial role is preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated resilience, approachability, and a positive, service-oriented attitude
• Ability to transition effectively between tasks and respond to changing priorities
• Ability to communicate orally and read and follow written instructions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the School community
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, guardians/parents, and peers

Other Requirements

• Availability to work overtime and on-call hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed
• Availability to change schedule when needed, either for backup or vacation coverage
• Successful completion of required background screening and fingerprinting in accordance with New Jersey Department of Education requirements and School policy
• Ability to operate various cleaning equipment
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, including up a flight of stairs

The position requires frequent walking throughout campus and the ability to climb stairs, as not all campus buildings have elevators. The position also requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors and to perform physical tasks associated with cleaning, maintenance, event setup, snow removal, and other campus needs.

Regular hours for this position are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, subject to change. The minimum hourly rate for this position is $20.00. The actual offer will be commensurate with skills and experience.

This position is located at our 55-acre campus in Pennington, NJ. The ability to climb stairs is required. Not all buildings on campus have elevators.
