Job description

Riggs Washington DC sits on the iconic downtown corner of Penn Quarter’s 9th and F Street in a historic building once home to Riggs National Bank. Each of the Hotel’s 181 guest rooms offers a playful nod to the building’s legacy. Riggs is home to the all-occasion European brasserie-inspired restaurant Café Riggs, as well as Silver Lyan – a subterranean bar from the internationally acclaimed Ryan Chetiyawardana, also known as Mr Lyan.

Job Description
As the senior leader at Riggs, the General Manager holds ultimate responsibility for the hotel’s overall performance. This role is pivotal in developing and implementing property strategies, guiding the leadership team, and achieving exceptional commercial outcomes. The General Manager is dedicated to delivering a luxury guest experience, fostering employee engagement, ensuring operational excellence, and preserving the integrity of this landmark asset—achieving these goals in harmony rather than as competing aspirations.

This position is highly visible, engaging with guests, staff, ownership, clientele, and the broader Washington, DC community. Success in this role requires a keen operational eye, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to cultivate a high-performing, inclusive team within a dynamic luxury hotel and food and beverage environment.

Foster a culture where the values of Family, Discovery, Detail, and Spirit are reflected in daily leadership behaviors. Hire and retain top talent in the luxury hotel industry, creating an environment that emphasizes excellent communication, positivity, personal growth, and continuous learning.

Who We Are

Riggs Washington DC is a luxury hotel in the landmark former Riggs National Bank building at the corner of 9th and F Streets in Penn Quarter. Built in 1891 and known as the Bank of Presidents, the building now holds 181 guestrooms and suites designed to echo a private safety deposit box, drawing on a narrative inspired by the golden age of banking.

Café Riggs, the hotel’s all day contemporary American brasserie, sits on the ground floor. Silver Lyan occupies the original bank vault and is the first bar outside Europe from the internationally acclaimed Mr. Lyan team. Riggs is a storied landmark with a modern spirit.

Hotel General Manager – Essential Functions
  • Set the vision, annual business plan and operating priorities for Riggs.

  • Lead the property leadership team with clear goals, decision rights and follow through.

  • Stay visible and hands on across the hotel, and represent Lore Group with ownership, regional leaders and the wider community.

  • Own the property P&L and deliver budgeted revenue, profit and cash flow.

  • Partner with Finance to assure proper budgeting, forecasting and capital planning. Act quickly on variances. Assure training and accountability is in place to drive operational profitability in all areas.

  • Guide Sales, Revenue, Marketing and F&B to grow profitable demand, optimize segment mix and increase property spend.

  • Serve as the advocate for guests throughout their entire journey, embodying the principles of luxury service standards at each interaction. Establish and hold the team accountable for executing these high standards consistently.

  • Leverage guest feedback, conduct quality audits, and analyze reputation data to identify and address root causes of any service issues. Ensure impeccable service recovery processes are in place and consistently recognize all guests to enhance their experience.

  • Uphold product quality through regular property inspections and timely maintenance, ensuring each aspect of the hotel meets the highest standards of excellence.

  • Foster a culture where the values of Family, Discovery, Detail, and Spirit are reflected in daily leadership behaviors.

  • Hire and retain top talent in the luxury hotel industry, creating an environment that emphasizes excellent communication, positivity, personal growth, and continuous learning. Select, coach, and nurture a strong leadership team while addressing performance concerns in a prompt and equitable manner. Take ownership of succession planning and development for critical roles within the organization.

  • Collaborate closely with the People & Culture team to enhance onboarding, training, performance management, recognition, and engagement initiatives. Ensure that all policies and employment practices are applied consistently and in accordance with legal standards.

  • Ensure Rooms, Food & Beverage, Engineering, Security and support functions operate as one. Maintain controls that safeguard hotel assets.

  • Ensure compliance with federal and District of Columbia law, licenses, life safety and food safety requirements. Lead emergency preparedness and crisis response. Prioritize preventive maintenance and deliver approved capital projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Must possess substantial and progressive leadership experience as a General Manager in luxury or upper upscale lifestyle hotels, with a proven track record in this role.

  • In-depth knowledge of both Rooms and Food & Beverage operations in a complex, service-driven environment.

  • Proven record of managing a hotel’s P&L, including oversight of annual budgets, forecasts, labor strategies, and capital priorities.

  • Strong commercial acumen that effectively integrates revenue strategy, sales, marketing, and operations to drive profitable growth.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing leadership teams while fostering an engaged and accountable culture within the organization.

  • Comprehensive understanding of hotel systems, performance reporting, employment practices, safety regulations, and operational compliance.

  • Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, business, or a related field is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet the operational needs of the hotel.
