Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a security officer to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. You will patrol the campus, respond to emergencies, and report conditions affecting safety while training others and coordinating with leadership.

Responsibilities include monitoring lobbies, documenting incidents, and applying de‑escalation techniques to keep calm, safe, and respectful surroundings.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate's degree preferred.
• 1–2 years related security or law enforcement experience required.
• 1–2 years of MedStar service in lieu of security experience allowed.
• MD Special Police Commission or SPO preferred; training requirements must be met.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
• Performs designated security patrols throughout the facility, potentially on foot, by vehicle or bicycle.
• Monitors lobbies, waiting areas, elevators and entrances for safety and security.
• Prepares and submits incident reports, investigations, and activity logs.
• Uses de-escalation techniques to keep staff, patients, and visitors safe and respected.
• Gathers information and evidence, notifies authorities when required, and calls for back-up as needed.
• Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found items.
• Monitors security cameras and other security systems as directed.
• Participates in meetings and committees and supports community outreach.
