Job summary

Stony Brook Medicine is seeking a Grounds Worker to maintain the appearance and conditions of state facilities, athletics fields, walkways, and roads. The role relies on excellent intrapersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail to work effectively with staff at all levels.

Responsibilities include sweeping, planting, mowing, pruning, snow removal, and basic greenhouse tasks. The position may involve leading students or contract staff and requires a valid New York driver's license.

Qualifications

• Non-competitive: must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and to communicate effectively to obtain and convey information.
• When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
• Some positions may require license or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides and other treatments.
• Preferred: hospital setting experience, interpersonal skills, time management, attention to detail and ability to work with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the appearance and conditions of grounds at State facilities.
• Cleans grounds by sweeping, raking, shoveling and removing debris.
• Plants seeds, bushes, trees using hand or power equipment.
• Cuts grass using lawnmowers; fertilizes and waters grounds; prunes bushes and trees.
• Removes snow and ice from walkways and plows roads.
• May lead students, inmates, clients, or contract employees in grounds and maintenance activities.
