Job summary

Michigan Medicine is hiring a custodian to perform routine cleaning and maintenance in a hospital setting. You will operate cleaning equipment, polish surfaces, stock supplies, and ensure a safe, sanitary environment for patients and staff.

The role requires physical activity, reading and understanding instructions, and the ability to work as part of a team in a dynamic healthcare facility. Work schedule is 32 hours per week, Friday–Monday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm, with union affiliation under AFSCME.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
• Must be able to follow both verbal and written instructions.
• Must perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling and reaching.
• Must work around sick and disabled patients in a hospital setting.
• Must be a team player, able to prioritize work and handle stress daily.
• Must perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description.

Responsibilities

• Operate vacuum cleaning equipment.
• Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings.
• Clean mirrors, glass surfaces, and interior glass from floor level and ladders.
• Clean toilet rooms and fixtures.
• Stock restroom supplies.
• Dust venetian blinds and mop floors and stairs.
• Spot wash walls and remove marks around sinks and switches.
• Clean patient bedside equipment and change linen.
• Move furniture and arrange furnishings as needed.
• Replace curtains and collect/transport waste and soiled linen.
• Open/lock buildings or rooms and manage lights/equipment.
• Report items in need of repair and maintain inventory of supplies.
