Job summary

Northwestern Medicine seeks a Chaplain to provide spiritual care, counseling, and pastoral services to patients, families, and hospital staff. The role includes leading in ethical discussions, participating in interdisciplinary teams, and offering bereavement and end-of-life support.

The chaplain will educate on Advanced Directives, collaborate with the Spiritual Care Department, and serve as a liaison with the community while complying with HIPAA and organizational policies.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in theology or related field is required.
• At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or be in the process of completing one unit within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Delivers a ministry of spiritual care, counseling, consultation, worship, prayer, sacraments, and spiritual/ emotional support services to patients, families, and hospital personnel.
• Identifies and clarifies ethical dilemmas; findings shared with Ethics Committee Chairs to determine if ethics consult is necessary.
• Leads and participates in interdisciplinary clinical team activities related to planning and coordinating patient care, including care conferences and family conferences.
• Provides end-of-life support and bereavement support as needed.
• Educates patients and staff on Advanced Directives and Goals of Care conversations.
• Develops and leads spiritual care services in collaboration with the Spiritual Care Department.
• Acts as a spiritual liaison between the hospital and community with patient-consent and HIPAA compliance.
• Escalates concerns following NM chain of command policies.
• Offers religious services to hospital staff as requested.
• On-call for spiritual care coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
• Assists in leading CALM/Mindful Moments as assigned.
• Attends to cultural and spiritual dynamics to improve patient and family care.
• Maintains chapel/sacred spaces and keeps supplies stocked.
• Maintains board certification or CEU requirements as per certifying bodies.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager of Spiritual Care

Education

Master’s degree in theology, religion, pastoral care, spiritual care, or divinity from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) – at least 1 unit or in progress (within 90 days)
