Job summary

Good Samaritan Hospice is seeking a Director of Social Work to lead a multidisciplinary team and provide clinical and administrative oversight across our service area. This leadership role focuses on delivering exceptional psychosocial support to patients and families while fostering growth and high standards of practice.

You will recruit and mentor social workers, coordinate staffing, ensure on-call coverage, and collaborate with nursing, spiritual care, and other clinical leaders.

Qualifications

• MSW from CSWE-accredited program (education required).
• Current Virginia LCSW license preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of healthcare social work, hospice/palliative care experience preferred.
• At least 3 years of supervisory/management experience.
• Strong understanding of end-of-life care, grief & loss, advance care planning, psychosocial assessment, and counseling.
• Ability to motivate, mentor, supervise, and develop social workers.
• Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Experience with electronic medical records and standard computer applications.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, clinical supervision, mentorship, and performance management for the hospice social work and counseling team.
• Oversee the quality and delivery of psychosocial services and ensure timely, patient-centered plans of care.
• Recruit, orient, develop, and evaluate social work staff while supporting professional growth.
• Coordinate staffing, caseload assignments, coverage, and continuity of care across the service area.
• Ensure 24/7 on-call counselor coverage and support for on-call staff.
• Collaborate with Interdisciplinary Group, Nursing, Spiritual Care, and other leaders to address patient/family needs.
• Represent Social Work at leadership level and participate in committees and initiatives.
• Lead QAPI initiatives, chart audits, and performance improvement projects.
• Ensure practices comply with regulatory requirements and professional ethics.
• Develop, review, and implement policies and programs for high-quality services.
• Build relationships with healthcare organizations and community partners.
• Facilitate education, team development, and department meetings.
• Respond to concerns related to social work services and identify solutions.
• Provide direct social work support when needed due to staffing or complex cases.
• Participate in Administrator on Call rotation.
• Support Good Samaritan’s mission and patient- and family-centered care.
