Job summary

Louisiana State University is seeking a Horticultural Attendant-Foreman to supervise grounds maintenance at the Landscape Services Building location. The role requires operating hand and power equipment, pruning, chemical application, and overall site upkeep.

Candidates must have 3 years of groundskeeping experience or 18 college hours in plant science/landscape; valid driver's license; ability to lift 50 lbs; willingness to work overtime and weekends; and pass drug screening as required by

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping; OR eighteen semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.
  • Drug/alcohol testing per university policy; valid driver's license and MVR
  • Safety-sensitive position; emergency essential; may report during emergencies
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and work in adverse weather

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct others operating power riding mower, trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc.
  • Support arboriculture labor: chip limbs, haul debris, prune, spray chemicals
  • Storm debris cleanup, drainage work, sod laying, weed removal, mulching, planting
  • Apply chemicals to control weeds and pests; fertilize and amend soils
  • Maintain interior plants: watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, disease/insect treatment
  • Assist with irrigation work and drainage tasks; perform minor concrete repair
  • Inspect mobile equipment; perform preventive maintenance as required
  • Assist with special events and litter control

Pay Grade: Classified Technician and Skilled Trades


Job Description: Supervise, Direct and work with others to maintain LSU grounds. Ability to operate hand and power equipment. Some plant ID knowledge, chemical application, Pruning, equipment maintenance, raking, and litter pickup. Working in adverse weather, overtime work, and weekend work. Ability to lift 50lbs.



  • Supervise and direct others and/or operate power riding mower (25HP or less), trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc. to maintain grounds, sidewalks, plazas, building entrances, canals, building perimeters, tree perimeters, road sides, etc. in a neat, clean, and safe condition.

  • Support arboriculture service with labor to chip limbs, haul debris, perform light chain saw work, pruning, chemical spraying, etc.

  • Storm debris cleanup, drain cleaning, laying sod, weed removal, mulching, digging, grading, cleaning signs and other items, painting, pressure washing, planting, etc. -60%

  • Supervise and direct others and/or apply chemicals to control weeds, control pests, fertilize and amend soils, apply mulch to beds and under tree canopies, perform weed removal, assist with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, litter container servicing for cleanliness, cigarette butt removal, etc.

  • Maintain interior plants to include watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, rotating, cleaning, treatment for disease and insects.

  • Direct others and/or assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, concrete repair labor as needed. -20%

  • Supervise and direct others and/or perform inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles. Change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, keep some records. Assist with preventative maintenance as required.

  • Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup. -10%

  • Direct the activity or 2 or more crews of Horticultural Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators, and others in assigned tasks. -5%

  • Perform related work as assigned. -5%


Minimum Qualifications: Three years of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping; OR Eighteen semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.


Special or Physical Qualifications: Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67. This position requires a valid driver's license, will require an MVR, and is subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04. This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04. This position is considered emergency essential and may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, climb stairs, stoop, squat, kneel and bend their back, climb ladders, and work reaching overhead. This position will require a physical evaluation based on the physical demands required.
