Job summary

Miami University is seeking a Horse Groom to support the Equestrian Center and care for the horses on campus.

Responsibilities include stall cleaning, feeding, bedding, and equipment upkeep, with opportunities to assist in horse shows and collaborate with student staff and campus departments.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in horse care and barn and farm machinery.
• Requires driver’s license.
• Previous full-time experience with a reputable horse industry professional is preferred.
• Some college education is preferred.
• Good communication skills and professional decorum.
• Knowledge of farm machinery and ability to drive horse trailers (2- and 6-horse).

Responsibilities

• Daily routine cleaning of stalls and periodic stripping/rebedding.

• Cleaning all areas including public spaces, tack rooms, offices and restrooms.
• Perform lifting, walking, bending, carrying and other tasks daily.
• Administer medicated feed supplements as requested by Director.
• Maintain records on supply orders and vehicle maintenance.
• Assist in preparing supplies for horse shows and onboarding vendors.
• Work with student staff to implement work lists and ensure task completion.

Job Description Summary

Performs a variety of tasks to assist in daily maintenance of the Miami University Equestrian Center and the horses kept there.

Job Description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Daily routine cleaning of stalls, and periodic stripping/rebedding of stalls.
• Feeding and watering of horses in the barns and fields.
• Sweeping, dusting, cleaning of all areas, including public areas, tack rooms, offices, restroom
• Perform tasks requiring lifting, walking, bending, carrying, climbing, etc. on a daily basis.
• Administer medicated feed supplements as requested by Director.
• Perform duties requiring a knowledge of different types of hay and grains, and knowledge and reliable judgment of different qualities and quantities.
• Perform duties that may require experience with different types of farm machinery, such as dragging arenas, hauling horses, or driving Gator.
• Perform weekly facility walk through.
• Ability to work with variety of departments on campus.
• Maintain farm vehicles through daily upkeep as well as in conjunction with Physical Facilities Department.
• Perform duties which may involve interaction with college students, parents, alumni, and prospective students, requiring a degree of communication skills and professional decorum.
• Assist in creating daily work list and turn out list.
• Open Equestrian Center and perform checklist of all areas.
• Assist in barn with team and KNH classes when needed.
• Work with student staff to implement work list and ensure completion of tasks.
• Assist in preparation of supplies for horse shows.
• Assist in ordering of supplies and development of relationship with vendors.
• Maintain records on supply orders, vehicle maintenance, and work orders.

Minimum Qualification

• Prior experience in horse care and barn and farmmachinery.
• Requires driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous full time experience with a reputable horse industry professional.
• Some college education.
• Good communication skills and exhibited professional decorum.
• Thorough knowledge of common products and practices used in the horse industry.
• Knowledge of and experience with farm machinery.
• Ability to drive horse trailers (2 and 6 horse)

Working Conditions

Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and operating equipment. Some lifting of materials weighing up to 70 pounds. Periodic assignment given which entail dealing with modestly unpleasant physical situations. There may be considerable noise generated by machine operation and some machinery may present an element of personal risk of injury due to an accident.
