Backbone Underground Inc is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our team in coastal North Carolina. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-minded, and experienced in underground utility construction, comfortable operating HDD equipment, and working as part of a crew in a fast-paced environment.

• Monitor drilling conditions and adjust as needed; assist with setup/breakdown of drilling equipment.
• Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
• Work closely with locators, equipment operators, and ground crew.
• Follow all safety requirements and keep the site clean and organized.
• Assist the crew to complete projects safely and on schedule.

We are looking for someone who is dependable, safety-minded, and experienced in underground utility construction. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating HDD equipment and working as part of a crew in a fast-paced construction environment.

Responsibilities

• Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment safely and efficiently
• Perform underground bores for utility installation
• Read and follow bore plans, utility markings, and job specifications
• Monitor drilling conditions and make adjustments as neededAssist with proper setup, operation, and breakdown of drilling equipment
• Perform daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance
• Work closely with locators, equipment operators, and ground crew
• Follow all company, OSHA, and jobsite safety requirements
• Help maintain a clean and organized jobsite
• Assist the crew as needed to complete projects safely and on schedule

Qualifications

• Previous HDD/drill operator experience preferred
• Knowledge of underground utility construction and HDD operations
• Ability to safely operate construction equipment
• Ability to troubleshoot basic drilling and equipment issues
• Must be dependable and able to work well with a crew
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of underground construction work
