Our company is a non-profit pro bono law firm serving the Southern Florida area. Every day, we work hard to meet the legal needs of a large, diverse, multiethnic community across Broward County. Our mission is to provide high-quality, free civil legal advice, representation, and education to the disadvantaged of Broward County. We have more than 125 employees, including more than 50 attorneys, who provide free services and resources across a broad range of civil legal issues that impact health, safety, and self-sufficiency. Through education, effective litigation, and collaboration, we work tirelessly to expand access to justice for all, identify needs in our community, and challenge systems, laws, and policies that adversely affect the underserved and marginalized.

Position Summary

Our Homeless Prevention Program advocates on behalf of individuals who are at imminent risk of homelessness. Currently, the unit has an opening for two full-time Staff Attorneys.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in the intake of each family, gathering all relevant information.
  • Processes payments if they are provided this one-time assistance.
  • Evaluates the situational cause of first-time evictions, reviews and evaluates the family's finances to determine whether they can sustain their rental obligations going forward, and works to ensure this is a one-time assistance.
  • Negotiates with the landlord and prepares formal settlement stipulations to be filed in court if necessary.
  • Makes the ultimate recommendation for rental assistance.
  • The Staff Attorney is responsible for all tasks delineated above and any other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A demonstrable awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the populations we serve.
  • A willingness to be an aggressive advocate for our client population.
  • Ability to work effectively with a large caseload and function professionally within a highly stressful environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently at times and also as an effective part of a team, including other attorneys, support staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work constructively with others.
  • Ability to speak more than one language is a plus.

Education & Experience

  • Active membership in the Florida State Bar.
  • Experience serving low-income individuals.
