Responsibilities

The Home Health Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA, LPTA) performs treatments, provides exercise instruction, and patient education aimed at improving the patient's well-being, following the established plan of care.

• Follow all state-specific laws governing physical therapy in home care, perform only procedures you are qualified for, and recommend changes to the supervising PT as needed.
• Instruct and assist patients in exercises, gait, functional activities, ADLs, transfers, safety, and prosthetic training.
• Observe, record, and report patient responses and condition changes to the supervising PT, nurse, or physician, and coordinate care with the healthcare team.
• Instruct patients, families, caregivers, and other team members within your scope of practice.

Education and Experience

License Requirements

• Current license, registration, or certification to assist in physical therapy practice in your state.
• Current CPR certification.
• Valid driver's license, vehicle insurance, and access to reliable transportation.

Additional State Requirements

• PA: Must have 2,000 hours of experience providing patient-related services under a licensed PT or have worked as a PTA for at least 3 years between October 2, 2003, and October 2, 2008. Part-time work is acceptable if equivalent to 3 years of full-time work.
