Job summary

Herrman Lumber is hiring a CDL Driver to safely transport lumber and materials to customer sites and suppliers, while complying with DOT regulations and maintaining delivery records.

You will secure loads, perform inspections, and interact professionally with customers. The role includes loading/unloading duties and participation in safety training.

Qualifications

• Must have a CDL Class A or B license.
• One year of commercial driving experience is required.
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds is required.

Responsibilities

• Operate commercial vehicles (Class A or B) to transport lumber and materials to customer sites and other locations.
• Transport materials on public highways, including routes crossing state lines.
• Adhere to DOT regulations, hours-of-service, and perform pre- and post-trip inspections.
• Report any vehicle problems and keep vehicles in safe operating condition.
• Secure loads using straps and tarps to prevent shifting during transit.
• Interact professionally with customers and suppliers, ensuring accurate deliveries.
• Maintain delivery records (bills of lading, receipts, fuel logs) per DOT and company policies.
• Assist with loading/unloading and yard organization when not driving.
• Report accidents, injuries, or safety violations promptly and follow procedures.
• Participate in safety and DOT compliance training sessions.

What will I do?

• Operate only commercial vehicles (Class A or B) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 10,000 pounds to transport lumber, building materials, and equipment to customer sites, suppliers, or other designated locations.
• Transport materials over public highways in interstate commerce, including routes that cross state lines or connect with terminals.
• Adhere to all DOT regulations, including hours-of-service (HOS) requirements, and complete pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Ensure vehicles remain in safe operating condition by reporting any mechanical issues immediately.
• Secure loads properly using straps, tarps, and other equipment to prevent shifting or damage during transit, ensuring compliance with DOT weight and load securement regulations.
• Follow all safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), adhering to speed limits, and maintaining safe distances from other vehicles.
• Interact professionally with customers and suppliers, ensuring accurate delivery of materials and addressing any concerns promptly.
• Maintain accurate records of deliveries, including bills of lading, delivery receipts, and fuel logs, in compliance with DOT and company policies.
• Assist with loading and unloading lumber, organizing materials in the yard, and performing other tasks as needed when not driving.
• Report any accidents, injuries, or safety violations immediately, following company and DOT procedures.
• Participate in ongoing safety and DOT compliance training sessions provided by the company.
• Immediately report any safety concerns, near-misses, or equipment issues to management.
• Comply with DOT-mandated drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pre-employment, random, and post-accident testing.

Position Requirements

• A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
• A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B is required.
• One year of previous commercial driving experience is required.
• Must be able to raise and move up to 75 pounds of equipment, tools, supplies, and/or other items from a lower to a higher position or horizontally from position to position.
