Perform and analyze clinical laboratory procedures and tests within scope of licensure associated with the preparation of specimens for the anatomical study of their microscopic structure in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
For West Virginia Labs
- Bachelor’s Degree in Histotechnology or related field.
- Licensed in the State of WV as a Laboratory Technician within 90 days of employment if performing specimen grossing.
For Pennsylvania, Ohio, And Maryland Labs
- Bachelor’s Degree in Histotechnology or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of laboratory experience in histopathology
- Histotechnologist Certification (HTL)
- Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) Certification
Core Duties and Responsibilities

- Perform assigned laboratory procedures (e.g., specimen accessioning and processing, inventory, ordering, embedding, tissue cutting and staining, frozen section production, special stains for cellular structures, immunohistochemistry).
- Prepare tissue and produce microscopic slides using various tissue techniques (fixation, embedding, sectioning, standard staining) to meet patient needs as requested by physicians.
- Operate laboratory equipment/instruments (cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, slide stainers, embedding centers, etc.) according to manuals and SOPs. Perform quality assurance, control, maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and quality control on instruments.
- Record all work (blocks, stains, slides, immunohistochemistry, frozen sections, autopsy and surgical slides, etc.).
- Maintain effective communication with laboratory sections, hospital departments, and the public to ensure information dissemination and problem resolution.
- Participate in educational activities of the institution, including training medical students, residents, and technicians.
- Recognize errors and technical problems, troubleshoot, and resolve issues promptly. Contribute to quality assurance and control procedures.
- Participate in planning, implementing changes, and improving productivity through meetings, projects, and discussions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods.
- Visual acuity and color differentiation required.
- Manual dexterity for instrument operation, including microscopes.
Working Environment
- Noisy environment.
- Foul odors.
- Use of protective apparel during procedures.
- Potential exposure to viruses, diseases, and infections.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with computer keyboard, monitor, and mouse.
- Effective communication skills (verbal, written, electronic).
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
- Follow complex procedures with minimal guidance.
Additional Job Description
The successful applicant will work in Ruby's Histology laboratory within the Health Science Center, collaborating with other Histotechnologists under supervision. Duties include rotating responsibilities, working flexible shifts (starting as early as 3 am and as late as 5 pm), adhering to SOPs, and demonstrating troubleshooting and multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
