Job Details

The Dermatology Department is seeking an experienced Histotechnologist to support their Greenville, DE, and Center City Philadelphia locations on a per diem basis. The Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. Responsibilities include receiving, processing, and preparing tissue samples for diagnosis using procedures such as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, immunohistochemistry, and special stains. The role may also involve specialization in specific laboratory disciplines, working effectively as part of a team to ensure quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Hours: 7am-4pm

Job Description
Essential Functions
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and staff consistent with Jefferson's values.
  • Perform histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy, and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopy review. Recognize deviations from expected results and refer them to supervisory personnel to prevent the release of inappropriate data. Embed 40-50 blocks and cut at least 30 blocks per hour, including biopsies, fatty tissue cases, and routine samples.
  • Maintain reagents and equipment in proper condition; record maintenance and troubleshoot issues to ensure accurate test results.
  • Use computer equipment to receive, validate, record, and transmit laboratory orders and test data efficiently.
  • Analyze and record QC data, implement corrective actions in consultation with supervisory personnel to ensure accuracy and precision.
  • Participate in Quality Control programs following established procedures to ensure accurate, reproducible, and timely testing.
  • Communicate with clinical staff regarding specimen submission requirements. Answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff informed of laboratory functions.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new employees and students, and in continuing education and proficiency testing to maintain technical competency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Histology, related life sciences, or applied sciences.
  • 1-2 years of previous experience preferred; student training accepted.
Minimum Certifications, Registration, or License Requirements
  • HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
