Job Details

The Dermatology Department is seeking an experienced Histotechnologist to support their Greenville, DE, and Center City Philadelphia locations on a per diem basis. The Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. The role involves receiving, processing, and preparing tissue samples for diagnosis using procedures such as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, immunohistochemistry, and special stains. The Histotechnologist may also specialize in specific laboratory disciplines and works effectively as part of a team within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Hours: 7am-4pm

Job Description

Essential Functions
  1. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

  2. Performs histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy, and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review. Recognizes deviations from expected results and refers them to designated supervisory personnel to prevent the release of inappropriate data. Embeds 40-50 blocks and cuts at least 30 blocks per hour, including biopsies, fatty tissue cases, and routine samples.

  3. Maintains reagents and equipment in proper quantities and condition. Records instrument maintenance and troubleshoots issues to ensure accurate test results.

  4. Uses computer equipment to receive and validate laboratory orders, record, and transmit test data efficiently.

  5. Analyzes and records QC data with appropriate follow-up. Implements corrective actions after consulting with supervisory personnel to verify the accuracy and precision of instruments.

  6. Participates in Quality Control programs following established procedures to ensure accurate, reproducible, and timely testing.

  7. Communicates with clinical staff about specimen submission requirements. Laboratory and hospital personnel answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff informed of laboratory functions.

  8. Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students, hospital and laboratory in-service and continuing education programs, and mandated annual proficiency testing to ensure currency of job knowledge and technical competency.

  9. Performs other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Histology, related life science, or applied science field.

  • 1-2 years' previous experience preferred; student training accepted.

Minimum Certifications, Registration, or License Requirements
  • HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
