Job summary

Hartford HealthCare is seeking a Histotechnician to prepare and process tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. The role covers fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining (H&E and special stains) and may include advanced techniques like immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization.

Ideal candidates hold a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program or equivalent education with clinical histology experience, strong English communication, and familiarity with HHC

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program.
  • Education from a NAACLS HT program acceptable for five years post-completion if not HT certified.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process tissue samples for routine and complex histologic techniques.
  • Include fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining (H&E and special stains).
  • Perform advanced techniques such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization and tissue microarray.
  • Provide accurate results and effective communication to the pathology team.

Job Description

Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine and complex histologic techniques to be examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The histologic techniques include the following: fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (H&E and Special Stains) of human tissue for evaluation. This includes complex histologic techniques such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, cryotomy, immunofluorescence, and tissue microarray.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program.
  • Unless currently working as a Histotechnician in an approved clinical laboratory or HT certified (ASCP or equivalent), the education received from a NAACLS accredited HT program is acceptable for a period of five years from the date of completion of that program.
OR
  • 60 semester hours of academic credit from an accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from an accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree AND one year of full time acceptable clinical experience
  • At least 1 year of clinical histology experience
  • HT Certification [ASCP equivalent]
  • Effective communication of English language
  • Proficiency in HHC Computer systems i.e. EPIC, SunQuest, CoPath preferred but not required
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills and exhibit a professional attitude.
