Job summary

George Washington’s Mount Vernon seeks a skilled Facilities Engineer to manage operation, maintenance, and repair of building systems across the Estate, ensuring safe and reliable facilities for staff, visitors, and guests.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in building engineering, hands-on problem solving, and knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and BAS. This onsite role requires a commitment to preservation and ability to work with contractors during events.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification preferred.
• 3–5 years in building engineering, facilities maintenance, or related field.
• Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, BAS and general maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, inspect, and repair building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and mechanical systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance and respond to work orders and emergencies promptly.
• Troubleshoot system failures with preservation of historic structures in mind.
• Monitor building automation systems and adjust for efficiency and comfort.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors; oversee work onsite.
• Maintain maintenance logs, service records, and compliance documentation.
• Support events and high-traffic periods with reliable system operations.
• Follow safety and preservation guidelines for historic site.
• Collaborate with Facilities, Preservation, Collections, and Operations teams.
