Job summary

Qualifications

• Histology program completion
• 3 years of histology bench experience performing high complexity testing
• ASCP certification preferred

Responsibilities

• Accession specimens and prepare gross tissue as needed
• Embed tissue and section at required thickness
• Perform routine and high complexity histology testing and special stains
• Carry out Immunohistochemistry procedures and in-situ hybridization
• Document quality issues and participate in QA activities
• Maintain equipment and troubleshoot issues as needed
• Ensure clean, safe work environment and compliance with policies

Job Description

Performs both routine and complex histologic techniques such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, and immunofluorescence on tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist to diagnose disease. Must be knowledgeable in the areas of pathology, management, education, and regulations that impact the field of histotechnology.

Job Responsibilities

• Perform all duties of the technical assistant as necessary, including accessioning
• Gross patient tissue according to protocol
• Carefully and efficiently embed tissue according to protocol
• Produce diagnostically optimal sections at an acceptable rate
• Perform routine and special stains
• Perform Immunohistochemistry procedures
• Perform routine and high complexity testing
• File paraffin blocks
• Alert lead tech and supervisor of low inventory of supplies and reagents
• Perform and document maintenance on equipment
• Help troubleshoot equipment issues
• Document quality issues
• Communicate problems effectively
• Read and follow all policies and procedures
• Participate in quality assurance activities
• Read emails and respond accordingly
• Engage with everyone in a respectful and professional manner
• Demonstrate teamwork by assisting others when possible
• Perform other duties when assigned
• Evaluate test controls and help troubleshoot problems
