Job summary

W.L. Gore and Associates in Flagstaff, AZ is seeking a Histology Specialist to join the Pathology team and support medical device research and development in partnership with pathologists, scientists, technicians and engineers.

The successful candidate will perform histology techniques, manage specimens, maintain equipment, and help implement SOPs while upholding GLP and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related Life Sciences field
  • ASCP HT/HTL certification required
  • Minimum 2 years in histology laboratory settings
  • Experience with paraffin embedding, microtomy, staining and IHC
  • Strong documentation and traceability skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and travel up to 5%

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex histological techniques (paraffin and resin embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, staining, IHC).
  • Develops and implements new histology techniques/workflows.
  • Conducts gross examination and processing of tissue and medical device specimens.
  • Manages specimens from receipt to disposal with LIMS traceability.
  • Collaborates with team to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and assists with procurement of new equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and supports procurement.
  • Contributes to SOPs and QA standards to ensure GLP compliance.
  • Provides technical training and troubleshooting for histology activities.

Job description

W.L. Gore and Associates is looking for a Histology Specialist to be employed at the research facility located in Flagstaff, AZ. The Histology Specialist will be a member of the Pathology team and will, in partnership with pathologists, pathology scientists, pathology technicians, research scientists, study directors and engineers, support medical device research and development.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated the ability to be highly competent in performing histology lab procedures and operating/maintaining lab equipment and possess excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively partner with other associates working in the lab. Attributes of a successful applicant include excellent organizational, time management, communication skills, as well as diligence and attention to not only detail, but also to quality and accuracy.

Responsibilities
  • Performs routine and complex histological techniques, including paraffin and resin embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, routine and special staining, and immunohistochemistry (IHC).
  • Develops, evaluates, and implements new histological techniques and workflows to support evolving laboratory and study needs
  • Conducts gross examination and processing of tissue and medical device specimens in accordance with study protocols and laboratory procedures
  • Manages specimens throughout their lifecycle, including receipt, accessioning into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), tracking, storage, archiving, and disposal while maintaining specimen integrity and traceability
  • Collaborates with team members to prioritize workload, resolve technical challenges, and ensure timely completion of project deliverables
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and assists with the procurement and onboarding of new equipment
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and chemicals and supports procurement activities
  • Participates in the development, review, revision, and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), laboratory workflows, and best practices to support continuous improvement and regulatory compliance
  • Ensures adherence to applicable quality systems, laboratory procedures, safety guidelines, and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements
  • Provides technical expertise, process optimization support, troubleshooting, and training for histology-related activities
  • Performs additional laboratory and pathology team functions as required
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related Life Sciences field
  • Histotechnician (HT) or Scientist in Histotechnology (HTL) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a lab performing histological specimen processing including but not limited to paraffin embedding, microtomy, routine staining, equipment management
  • Demonstrates strength in maintaining data integrity including but not limited to specimen traceability and accurate documentation throughout the laboratory workflow
  • Demonstrates strength in organizational skills and workload management including: using time effectively, prioritizing competing tasks, and meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrates strength in written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates strength working independently as well as with a team
  • Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to travel up to 5%
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with advanced histological techniques, including grossing, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry (IHC), resin embedding, and special staining methods
  • Experience developing, optimizing, and implementing new histological methods or laboratory processes
  • Experience in a regulated laboratory environment (GLP, GMP, CLIA, or CAP)
