Job Description
The Histology Lab Assistant supports the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.
This role involves entry-level tasks in specimen processing and routine preparation of surgical and autopsy microscopic slides. The position requires communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen issues and participation in the laboratory occurrence management program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support histology laboratory activities using automation and manual methods to stain and coverslip slides, label, document, and submit to appropriate personnel.
  2. Review protocol files and monitor logs to ensure routine slides are submitted correctly.
  3. Perform basic embedding procedures for surgical and autopsy tissues and document processes.
  4. Reconcile paraffin blocks, prioritize based on guidelines, and maintain accurate records.
  5. Respond to inquiries about blocks, slides, and case status, and escalate issues as needed.
  6. Use laboratory equipment proficiently and safely, including tissue processors and automated stainers.
  7. Maintain and disinfect equipment, report malfunctions, and keep laboratory areas clean and compliant.
  8. Monitor inventory levels, restock supplies, and ensure a safe work environment.
  9. Participate in safety, infection control, and staff training activities.
  10. Assist in orientation and training of new staff and pursue personal development opportunities.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma.
  • Keyboard proficiency and familiarity with medical terminology.

Preferred:

  • A.S. degree in biological or health sciences or related field.
  • Previous laboratory support or health-related experience.
