Job Description

The Histology Lab Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Histology Lab Assistant supports the histology and surgical pathology laboratory with entry-level tasks related to specimen processing and routine preparation of surgical and autopsy microscopic slides. Responsibilities include communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen issues, and participation in the laboratory occurrence management program.

Responsibilities
  1. Support histology laboratory tasks such as staining, coverslipping, labeling, and submitting slides, ensuring proper documentation and communication.
  2. Review protocol files and monitor logs for specimen submission and paperwork completion.
  3. Perform basic embedding procedures and routine paraffin block reconciliation, prioritizing based on guidelines.
  4. Maintain accurate manual and electronic records, investigate discrepancies, and communicate effectively with staff.
  5. Use laboratory equipment safely and proficiently, including tissue processors and automated stainers, and perform routine maintenance.
  6. Ensure cleanliness and safety in the laboratory environment, including spill cleanup and inventory monitoring.
  7. Participate in safety and infection control activities, and assist in training new staff.
  8. Engage in personal development activities, such as educational sessions and meetings.
  9. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required: High School diploma, keyboard proficiency, familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Preferred: A.S. degree in biological or related sciences, prior laboratory support or health-related experience.
