Job description

Description

The Histology Lab Assistant supports the mission, vision, and values of NM, adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The role involves assisting in the histology and surgical pathology laboratory with entry-level tasks such as specimen processing and routine preparation of surgical and autopsy microscopic slides. The position requires effective communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen issues and participation in the laboratory occurrence management program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support histology laboratory processes by staining and coverslipping slides using automation and manual methods, labeling slides, and ensuring proper documentation and tracking.
  2. Review protocol files for Gross Only specimens and monitor logs to ensure all routine H&E slides are submitted.
  3. Perform and document basic embedding procedures for surgical and autopsy tissues.
  4. Reconcile routine paraffin blocks, prioritize based on guidelines, and document accordingly.
  5. Maintain manual and electronic records for easy retrieval, investigate discrepancies, and escalate issues when necessary.
  6. Respond to routine inquiries about blocks, slides, and case status, directing technical questions to appropriate staff.
  7. Use laboratory equipment safely and proficiently, including tissue processors, embedding centers, and automated stainers, within designated turnaround times.
  8. Perform routine instrument maintenance, cleaning, disinfection, and report malfunctions per SOP.
  9. File paraffin blocks daily, transport specimens as needed, and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  10. Monitor inventory levels, notify the coordinator of supply issues, and foster teamwork through effective communication.
  11. Participate in safety and infection control activities, assist with training new staff, and pursue personal development opportunities.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma
  • Proficiency with keyboard and computer use
  • Familiarity with medical terminology

Preferred:

  • A.S. degree in biological, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or related fields
  • Previous experience in laboratory support or healthcare
