Job Description

This position will float to Oak Brook, Geneva, and Warrenville cancer centers. The CLA II reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with main lab staff, ancillary departments, nurses, and providers to ensure excellent patient care.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory information system.
  • Input and retrieve lab results in laboratory or hospital computer systems.
  • Register specimen drop-offs (e.g., Home health) in LIS, ensuring accurate data entry.
  • Properly process specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate testing areas.
  • Identify and resolve problems using appropriate resources with supervisor, manager, pathologist, or coworkers as needed.
  • Verify the accuracy of instruments and test kits; responsible for quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory automation systems as appropriate.
  • Perform diagnostic/analytic testing of specimens, interpret, document, and report results to providers.
  • Perform waived and/or moderate complexity testing under the direction of CLS.
  • Ensure correct testing is ordered and properly identify the reference laboratory for referred specimens.
  • Communicate specimen rejections, critical/notifiable results to clinical personnel, and complete documentation.
  • Review/record refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records; document concerns and report to maintenance.
  • Follow lab procedures, including timely follow-up on outstanding orders and time-sensitive draws/charges.
  • Answer phone calls, triage calls appropriately, and coordinate courier pickups as needed.
Department Specific Duties
  • Perform phlebotomy and other specimen collections per age-related standards.
  • Complete biological transport training and maintain competency.
  • Recognize temperature-dependent transport conditions and select correct packing.
  • Monitor and maintain specialty supplies, including kits and collection containers.
  • Ensure supplies are available and stored correctly.
  • Perform microbiology setups or other testing preparations.
  • Assist with bone marrow and biopsy processing if needed.
  • Pull AP slides for second opinions and log material back into Epic.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a general lab, specimen processing, or phlebotomy, or enrolled in a lab-related education program.

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy Certification or training from an accredited institution.
