Qualifications

• Education: minimum high school graduate; formal training in anatomy, medical terminology, and coding.
• Experience: 2+ years coding in multiple specialties and with various payers.
• Certifications: RHIT/RHIA/CPC/CCS or AHIMA/AAPC certs; specialty certs within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Reviews inpatient, outpatient, and professional records to identify principal/secondary diagnoses and procedures.
• Assigns ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes per guidelines and payer requirements.
• Utilizes encoding systems and references to ensure accurate code selection and compliance.
• Calculates DRGs and APCs to support appropriate reimbursement.
• Assigns POA indicators for inpatient encounters.
• Identifies missing charges and documentation to support billing.
• Maintains 95% coding accuracy per audits and meets productivity standards.
• Escalates coding, billing, or compliance concerns to leadership.
