Job summary

The State of Indiana, through INDOT, invites you to join the Chandler Unit as a skilled maintenance professional. You will operate highway maintenance and traffic equipment, inspect and repair roadways, and ensure safety standards are met across Indiana’s transportation network.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL or obtain one within 90 days.
  • Must pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Knowledge of highway guidelines, laws and regulations for construction inspection, testing, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of drafting and surveying techniques.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate a crew in the field.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents.
  • Must endure exposure to inclement weather and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with INDOT safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair and clean highways and rights-of-way.
  • Ensure staff complete work assignments and report problems.
  • Communicate with contractors to ensure procedures meet INDOT standards.
  • Perform winter operations including snow and ice removal.
  • Inspect and perform routine equipment maintenance and refueling.
  • Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Perform emergency response duties such as traffic control and signs placement.
  • Attend work site regularly as scheduled.
  • Provide unit crews with technical expertise, oversight, and specialized equipment to ensure work is completed and report problems to the Bridge Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Operate basic and intermediate highway maintenance and bridge equipment to maintain, repair and clean bridges, highways, and right-of-ways.
  • Sample and test construction materials according to QA and specification requirements.
  • Visit material producers’ plants, construction job sites or INDOT facilities to collect material samples for testing.
  • Perform various tests on materials used in INDOT contracts.
  • Calculate and record test results in the INDOT reporting system.
  • Involved in planning, design, construction, and rehabilitation of state-owned highways and bridges.
  • Perform construction inspection, assisting the project supervisor/engineer.
  • Ensure construction tests, measurements and inspections are completed and recorded in a timely manner.
  • Perform facility maintenance such as repairing and installing brine making and storage systems.
  • Maintain qualifications for Soil Test procedures.
  • Operate and maintain geotechnical lab equipment to perform soil & rock testing.
  • Prepare and perform advanced testing on soils & rock samples.
