Role Overview:

As a Highway Technician, you will work on Indiana highways and interstates performing general maintenance to ensure roads are clean and safe. Responsibilities include picking up trash, filling potholes, maintaining drainage, snow plowing during winter, and assisting with traffic control during emergencies. This entry-level position offers opportunities for career advancement and requires mandatory overtime during emergency operations, including winter.

Salary:

The position typically starts at $20.00 per hour. Salary may be adjusted based on education and experience.

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour. Those without a CDL will have 90 days to obtain one, with training provided, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon certification.

Location:

This position is located in INDOT’s Scottsburg Unit.

A Day in the Life:

The essential duties include:

  • Following all safety policies and procedures.
  • Operating highway maintenance and traffic equipment.
  • Loading supplies and materials.
  • Performing winter operations like snow and ice removal.
  • Responding to emergencies, including traffic control and lane closures.
  • Inspecting and maintaining equipment.
  • Performing miscellaneous labor tasks.

Additional duties may include:

Traffic Inventory Specialist:

  • Maintaining, repairing, and installing traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings.
  • Receiving and recording new materials and supplies.
  • Maintaining inventory and operating computerized inventory systems.
  • Attending worksite(s) as scheduled.

What You'll Need for Success:

Applicants must have:

  • A valid CDL or ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Ability to pass a drug test.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks like lifting, dragging, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate specialized traffic equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of electronic data processing related to inventory control.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This role may have supervisory duties depending on agency needs.
