Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance worker to perform vegetation and road/bridge repair tasks. You will operate a tractor with a mower and other equipment, assist with drainage work, and help set up work zones following SCDOT guidelines.

The role requires a valid driver's license and six months of related work experience; a Class A CDL must be obtained within six months. Availability for extended hours and work in various weather conditions is expected.

Job Responsibilities

Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as a combination tractor with side-mounted mower. Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium-duty equipment such as tandem dump truck and skid steer in a variety of activities associated with the repair and preservation of roads and bridges in the state highway system. Performs manual labor to assist with installing and repairing catch basins and other drainage structures and placing drainage pipes. Uses power tools. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control and Field Guide to warn motorists. Pick up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations; includes being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts, during the day or night. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
