Job summary

State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance worker to operate tandem dump truck, large roller, and skid steer for roadway and right-of-way upkeep.

The role includes patching, signage and pavement markings, vegetation management, drainage work, and assisting with traffic control per MUTCD. Six months of related experience and a CDL within six months are required; lifting up to 50 lbs and outdoor work are common.

Job Responsibilities

Operates equipment to include tandem dump truck, large roller (4 tons), and skid steer loader. Perform common maintenance activities such as patching, limb and brush trimming, sign and pavement marking maintenance, shoulder and ditches. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public during maintenance operations. Assist in the placement of traffic control devices in accordance with the MUTCD manual. Works with a crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities. Areas of work may include but is not limited to, signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, patching and paving. Operates small equipment, power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow and attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges. Performs duties requested during inclement weather events and on-call services for after-hour emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
