Job summary

The State of South Carolina is seeking a road maintenance worker in Moncks Corner to perform manual labor for road upkeep, operate equipment, and ensure safe traffic flow during repairs. You may be deployed for varied duties and weather-related operations as required.

On-call status requires readiness 24 hours a day, and a Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement. State benefits include health, retirement, paid leave, and more.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual road maintenance tasks such as clearing right-of-ways and patching potholes.
• Operate and maintain small equipment like tractors, mowers, brush chippers, and snow plows.
• Flag traffic to protect workers and the motoring public during repairs.
• Haul materials with dump trucks and flatbeds (asphalt, limestone, dirt, pipe, etc.).
• Respond to emergencies and work outside normal hours when on-call (24 hours).
• Use power and hand tools for roadway maintenance and related duties.

Job Responsibilities

Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance as clearing of the right-of ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairs to bridges, paving driveways and laying sideline/cross line pipe. Operates and maintains small equipment such as tractor with mower, brush chipper and snow plow used in various phases of road maintenance. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, motoring public and equipment. Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Assists in emergencies and inclement weather operations which may include working hours outside of normal work schedule. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools including chainsaws and pole saws and uses hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
