Job summary

Idaho Transportation Department in Mackay, Idaho, seeks a Transportation Technician Apprentice – Highway Maintenance. This 3-5 year program blends on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and a staged wage progression across three steps with clear targets.

Starting wages are $21.05 to $21.55 per hour, rising to $22.60, $24.14, and $25.83 as steps are completed. A $1,500 sign-on bonus is offered. CDL required within 60 days; pre‑employment testing applies.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Experience operating vehicles with manual transmissions.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within 60 days of hire.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
• May require irregular shifts, overtime, weekends, and travel.

Responsibilities

• Perform entry-level traffic services such as snow plowing, striping, and replacing and repairing traffic signs and posts.
• Perform entry-level technical highway maintenance and engineering work.
• Operate a variety of power tools and construction equipment to maintain roadways, signs, bridges and other transportation facilities.
• Conduct routine inspections and field tests on construction and maintenance projects.
• Conduct sample and routine material testing.
• Work in all types of weather conditions and in hazardous environments; may involve long shifts and overnight stays.
