Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to operate equipment and perform a range of roadway repairs, drainage work, signage installation, and debris removal. You will support traffic control in active work zones and may be required for extended hours in poor weather.

A valid driver’s license is required, and you must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement. The job involves physical tasks and exposure to traffic and outdoor conditions.

Qualifications

• This classification has no minimum training or experience requirements.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement.
• Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs and working near traffic.

Responsibilities

• Operate small equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Place traffic control devices and set up work zones.
• Serve as flagger to direct traffic safely.
• Repair and preserve asphalt and concrete pavements.
• Assist with drainage installations and repairs.
• Assist with traffic signs and pavement markings.
• Pick up litter and debris, including during emergencies.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
