School Guidance Counselor 9-12

Full-time guidance counselor: Member of a cohesive and collaborative guidance team, involved in all aspects of the comprehensive guidance program with a full caseload in grades 9-12. The position applies experience in problem-solving and communications to benefit department operations and curriculum.

The job includes:

  • Counseling students individually in personal/social, academic and career/college realms
  • Working with students in career and post-secondary planning; writing recommendations for private school, college, employment and other programs; submitting applications electronically
  • Developing and teaching guidance seminar curriculum and parent presentations
  • Working with students to develop their academic schedules
  • Consulting with teachers and parents regarding students’ academic, emotional and behavioral programs
  • Working closely with special educators regarding students’ IEPs and educational progress; reviewing testing; updating education plans; managing 504s
  • Assisting in coordinating practice ACT, PSAT, and AP

Successful candidates will have:

  • Valid or pending Massachusetts DESE Guidance licensure
  • Experience working with high school students as a guidance counselor
  • Experience building collaborative relationships with both parents and professionals
  • Experience using Naviance and student information systems

Compensation and Benefits

This is a school-year role (184 days over a full school year), represented by the Weston Education Association, and entitled to the same salary schedule as teachers and other professional staff. Additionally, the Weston Public Schools offers a comprehensive benefits package, including subsidized health insurance and participation in the Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement System. Weston High School offers its students a comprehensive and diversified program. Academic courses range from basic to advanced levels. Honors courses are offered in mathematics, world history, foreign languages, and science, while specific Advanced Placement subjects include art, biology, calculus, computer science, English, French, Spanish, European and U.S. History, and physics. Students must take at least five "majors" each semester and may include courses in the fine and applied arts, business, and home economics. The high school also has a highly successful community service program in which students participate. Specialists in the Skills Center and Guidance Department provide a broad range of tutoring, personal counseling, and college placement services. Most students participate in after-school activities, with athletics, theater, music, art, and publications being the most popular. Among the special facilities available to students are a library with more than 20,000 books, videos and audio tapes, and extensive on-line database; four networked computer laboratories; a modern world language laboratory; a recorded books library; choral and instrument rooms; a dance studio; and a physical fitness and weight room. An indoor swimming pool and a synthetic surface track are among Weston's fine athletic facilities.
