Family Life Academy Charter School (commonly called FLACS) is a nonprofit network of high-performing charter schools in the South Bronx. COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELOR (9-12) JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the School Principal, the College and Career Counselor provides guidance to students in creating and implementing postsecondary plans. They work with students to identify interests and strengths, develop career plans, choose elective courses and extracurriculars that will support these plans, and apply for college or enter the workforce. The College and Career Counselor is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all students make choices about their post-secondary plans that are well informed and not choices they are forced into because of a lack of other options.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Guide students in making decisions about post-graduate endeavors including careers and career, such as choosing an occupation and the type of degree to pursue.
  • Support each student in identifying their strengths and interests and in developing a postsecondary career plan
  • Help students select and apply for educational programs that will further their career plan
  • Organize college fairs and visits
  • Meet with students in individual settings, small groups and large groups
  • Teach students job-search skills, such as interviewing and networking
  • Design and implement workshops for families on college readiness, college process, and financial aid among other topics
  • Maintain positive relationships with students and their families

Qualifications:
  • NYS Department of Education fingerprint clearance
