Salary: In accordance with the Boone County Schools approved coaching salary schedule.

Job Summary

The High School Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in the organization, development, and operation of the high school softball program at Van Jr./Sr. High School. The Assistant Coach will support the instruction, supervision, and development of student-athletes while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, academic achievement, and positive character development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and implementing the high school softball program in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) regulations.


• Assist in conducting practices, conditioning activities, and softball skill-development sessions.


• Provide instruction in softball fundamentals, including throwing, catching, hitting, fielding, pitching, base running, and offensive and defensive strategies.


• Assist with the supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, team travel, and other softball-related activities.


• Support the Head Coach in establishing and enforcing team rules, expectations, and standards of conduct.


• Promote a positive athletic environment that encourages academic achievement, teamwork, sportsmanship, character development, respect, and responsibility.


• Assist in developing game strategies, evaluating player performance, and preparing student-athletes for competition.


• Help maintain softball equipment, uniforms, facilities, and supplies.


• Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes by following established safety procedures and athletic protocols.


• Maintain positive and professional communication with student-athletes, parents, school administrators, and coaching staff.


• Assist in monitoring student-athlete eligibility and compliance with applicable WVSSAC regulations.


• Coordinate with the Head Coach regarding practice schedules, game preparation, transportation, and other program needs.


• Attend required coaching meetings, professional development sessions, and training.


• Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, leadership, and good sportsmanship.


• Perform other duties related to the softball program as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.

Qualifications

• Meet all applicable West Virginia Department of Education, WVSSAC, and Boone County Schools requirements for athletic coaches.


• Possess knowledge of softball fundamentals, rules, strategies, and coaching techniques.


• Demonstrate effective leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.


• Be able to establish positive working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and the community.


• Complete all required coaching certifications, training, and background checks.


• Previous softball playing or coaching experience is preferred.


• Demonstrate the ability to effectively instruct, motivate, and supervise high school student-athletes.

Terms of Employment

This is a seasonal extracurricular coaching position requiring participation in scheduled practices, contests, meetings, and other activities associated with the high school softball program. Compensation shall be based on the approved Boone County Schools coaching salary schedule.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the Principal and/or Athletic Director, with input from the Head Coach, in accordance with Boone County Schools policies and procedures.
