Job summary

AmeriCorps, through the First2 Network, seeks to mentor first-generation, rural, and low-income students majoring in STEM across West Virginia. The role includes coordinating activities, recruiting participants, and engaging stakeholders to improve statewide STEM pipelines.

Members will work directly with students and with campus offices to create supportive pathways, conduct outreach, and track outcomes to boost college success rates.

Qualifications

  • Attending sessions weekly to share resources.
  • Meeting individually with students to monitor progress.
  • Coordinating referrals to tutoring, advising, Accessibility Services Financial Aid, or Counseling as needed.
  • Develop and lead a summer bridge pilot for Marshall University.
  • Conduct follow-ups throughout the summer.
  • Coordinate with campus offices to ensure students arrive feeling supported.
  • Track fall GPA, academic standing, and spring retention to measure program impact.
  • Provide support with re-enrollment steps, including SAP appeals and financial aid challenges.
  • Conduct intake meetings to understand withdrawal reasons and create return plans.
  • Provide consistent check-ins for students.
  • Outreach to previously withdrawn students who have not yet reenrolled.

Job description

The first two years of college are a challenge in STEM career pathways, particularly if your parents haven't gone to college or you are a rural or low-income student. The First2 Network is part of the National Science Foundation INCLUDES community, a National Science Foundation initiative to increase STEM innovation in our country. An AmeriCorps member placed in First2 would help to mentor first-generation, rural, and low-income students who are majoring in STEM, coordinate student activities, recruit students, and engage stakeholders around the state. While working directly with students, a First2 AmeriCorps members will also work with community members across the state to both better serve these students and to help improve systems and practices so that we better serve these students in West Virginia.

Member Duties :

  • Attending sessions weekly to share resources
  • Meeting individually with students to monitor progress
  • Coordinating referrals to tutoring, advising, Accessibility Services Financial Aid, or Counseling as needed.
  • Member will develop and lead a summer bridge pilot for high-school seniors who have been conditionally admitted to Marshall University.
  • Conduct individualized or small-group follow-ups throughout the summer.
  • Coordinate with key campus offices to ensure students arrive feeling supported
  • Track fall GPA, academic standing, and spring retention for all participants to measure program impact
  • Offer support with re-enrollment steps, including SAP appeals, financial aid challenges, and academic planning.
  • Conduct intake meetings to understand withdrawal reasons and create individualized “return plans.”
  • Provide consistent check-ins for students
  • Perform targeted winter and summer outreach to previously withdrawn students who have not yet reenrolled.
