Job summary

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) seeks a High Pressure Plant Tender to operate and maintain high-pressure boilers, incinerators, and related systems. Under supervision, you will inspect, repair, and adjust equipment, read meters, and keep logs while supporting facility operations across City streets and facilities.

Qualifications emphasize hands-on boiler experience and related technical training.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience within the last ten years operating and maintaining high pressure boilers or the equivalent marine experience.
• Not less than one year of experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school.

Responsibilities

• Hand fire high-pressure boilers using solid fuels, and stoker equipment and incinerator furnaces using burnable refuse.
• Clean fires.
• Tend and operate stoker equipment, oil-, gas-, or coal-fired high-pressure boilers and incinerator furnaces, and related equipment.
• Maintain, clean, repairs and assist in the inspection and testing of high-pressure boilers, incinerators, auxiliaries and related equipment; maintains, cleans, repairs and/or tends to, and assists in the inspection and testing of equipment and systems used in heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related auxiliary equipment, such as cooling towers, air handlers, chilled water pumps, air cleaners and filters, fans, heat exchangers, tubes, air treatment assemblies, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, and controls.
• May dismantle and/or assemble equipment associated with heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and mechanical systems to make it operational. Requisitions parts as required.
• May operate a motor vehicle.
• Inspect, clean, test, operate, repair, maintain and alter boilers, furnaces, pollution control equipment, and related auxiliary equipment and appurtenances.
• Inspect and read meters, gauges and other controls of operating and related equipment.
• Use hand and powered tools and welds and burns in the performance of assigned duties.
• Work from sketches, drawings and blue prints.
• Requisitions parts and maintain inventory.
• Keep records and logs.
• Supervise assigned personnel.
• Perform related work.
