Job summary

The NYC Department of Buildings is seeking an Inspector (Boilers) to perform technical inspections of boilers and other pressure vessels for compliance with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, and approved plans.

Unit assignment and work location are citywide; candidates may need to work shifts including nights and weekends. A valid NY driver license is required and residency requirements vary by program.

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time boiler experience or related boiler inspection work.
• Three years of experience plus 60 credits toward a degree in mechanical fields.
• Completion of boiler apprenticeship with additional experience or credits.
• Licenses or certificates listed in the minimum qualifications.
• Education/experience equivalent to the above scenarios.

Responsibilities

• Performs technical inspections of boilers and pressure vessels for compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Responds to accidents and investigates complaints related to boiler systems.
• Examines boiler components for defects, corrosion and wear.
• Issues violations, summonses and stop work orders when necessary.
• Maintains records and prepares reports; testifies when required; may supervise staff.
