Job summary

St. Clair County seeks a responsible Heavy Equipment Operator to safely operate a variety of machines at the county landfill. You will perform pre-operation checks, maintain equipment, and assist in waste compaction and covering according to lift plans.

Team coordination and strict safety adherence are essential. The role requires at least 1 year of experience in heavy equipment operation, a high school diploma or GED, and may prefer landfill experience and operator certifications.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school (GED acceptable).
• 1 year of experience in safe operation and maintenance of heavy equipment; landfill experience preferred.
• Heavy equipment operator certifications preferred.
• Strong understanding of heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including compactors, bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, motor graders, and articulated dump trucks.
• Perform daily pre-operation checks and minor maintenance on assigned equipment.
• Spread, compact, and cover waste materials according to lift plans and procedures.
• Maintain safety and environmental compliance while working with the team.
• Communicate with supervisors and spotters via two-way radio or hand signals.
• Assist with general site maintenance tasks as directed; operate water trucks for dust control as needed.
