$64,419- $100,899. Salary commensurate with education and credentials.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at John Jay College-CUNY seeks an instructor at the rank of Doctoral Lecturer with experience teaching Spanish for heritage learners. The position of Doctoral Lecturer is tenure-bearing through a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) following the sixth annual reappointment. Lecturers become eligible for promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer after eight years of full-time continuous service.

The appointed faculty member will perform teaching and related faculty functions in areas of expertise, share responsibility for departmental and College committee work and other duties as assigned by the chair. Teaching duties include a 4/4 load (eight undergraduate courses per year). Service duties include actively recruiting, advising and mentoring Spanish majors, minors, and Certificate students, among others. Responsibilities will include working collaboratively with colleagues, the department, and the College. The hiring committee is especially interested in applicants who contribute to the goals of the college through their leadership, community service, and/or lived experiences.

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and well-prepared to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. As demonstrated in John Jay College’s Seven Principles for a Culturally Responsive, Inclusive, and Anti-Racist Curriculum (https://www.jjay.cuny.edu/john-jays-seven-principles), the College seeks a faculty member who thrives in a multicultural, collaborative academic environment and is committed to both access and excellence in higher education.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a BA in Spanish with concentrations in Spanish<>English Legal Translation/Interpretation, and Spanish and Latin American Literatures and Cultures; a Spanish minor; and three Certificates in Legal Translation and/or Interpretation. It also offers L2 courses in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Portuguese. For Spanish, both L2 and Heritage tracks are offered.

By the date of appointment, applicants must possess a PhD degree in Spanish linguistics with a focus in Heritage learners or in a related discipline from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution.

Applicants must also have the ability to effectively teach Spanish for heritage learners at all levels of undergraduate instruction. The successful candidate may also be expected to teach Spanish (L2) language courses at all levels of undergraduate instruction.

Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to both teaching and service. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.

Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following qualifications: three years of experience teaching Spanish for Heritage learners; experience using innovative teaching methods to effectively engage a diverse student body; experience in curriculum design; demonstrated ability to teach effectively in diverse modalities; experience and interest in developing internships, community outreach, and service learning.

Lecturers at CUNY do not have an expectation of scholarly productivity, but we welcome and will support applicants with active research agendas. Ph.D. candidates (including ABDs) are encouraged to apply.
