Summary:

The Unconventional is seeking a highly skilled Language Instructor to join our team to support the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). In this role, you will be responsible for providing classroom language instruction for the Defense Language Institute - Washington (DLI-W).

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Provide professional foreign language instruction to students in a classroom and/or virtual environment.
• Prepare for each class, tailoring the lesson to individual student’s needs.
• Base instruction on proficiency-oriented principles of second language acquisition.
• Utilize culturally-based, learner-centered instruction employing authentic materials.
• Focus on communicative competence in real-life situations.
• Teach writing skills to promote language acquisition.
• Incorporate methods like Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT).
• Devote attention to non-participatory listening and general reading comprehension.
• Bridge the gap between global and job-specific language performance skills.
• Engage students’ higher-order thinking skills and develop independent learning skills.
• Incorporate diverse instructional technologies.
• Integrate intercultural competence and cultural knowledge into language instruction.
• Use authentic materials and language in immersive ways.
• Ensure curriculum/materials include a variety of target language texts and skills.
• All courses must include a syllabus.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least two (2) years of experience in teaching adults using proficiency-oriented methods.
• Four (4) years of relevant teaching experience may substitute for education.
• Must be an educated native speaker of the language/dialect taught with strong English skills.
• Ability to adapt to varying student learning styles.
• Must have Oral Proficiency Interview scores of Level 3 or above in the Target Language.
• Must pass a background check.
