Summary:

The Unconventional is seeking a highly skilled Language Instructor to join our team to support the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). In this role, you will be responsible for providing classroom language instruction for the Defense Language Institute - Washington (DLI-W).

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide professional foreign language instruction to students in a classroom and/or virtual environment.
  • Prepare for each class, tailoring the lesson to individual student’s needs.
  • Utilize proficiency-oriented principles of second language acquisition with a strong focus on effective instructional methods for adult learners.
  • Employ culturally-based, learner-centered instruction using authentic materials and real-world tasks.
  • Generate uninhibited, spontaneous use of the language across all levels of proficiency.
  • Teach writing skills to promote language acquisition and proficiency.
  • Incorporate methods like Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT).
  • Devote attention to non-participatory listening and general reading comprehension.
  • Bridge the gap between global and job-specific language performance skills.
  • Engage students’ higher order thinking skills and develop independent learning skills.
  • Incorporate diverse instructional technologies into training.
  • Integrate intercultural competence and cultural knowledge into language instruction.
  • Use authentic materials and immersive teaching methods guided by a diagnostically oriented approach.
  • Curriculum/materials should include sufficient quantity and analysis of listening and reading Target Language (TL) texts.
  • All courses must include a syllabus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least two (2) years of relevant experience in intensive training, teaching adults using proficiency-oriented methods aimed at ILR skill levels 2 and 3.
  • Four (4) years of relevant teaching experience may substitute for education.
  • Must be a native speaker of the language/dialect taught with strong English language skills.
  • Ability to adapt to varying learning styles requiring different teaching strategies.
  • Oral Proficiency Interview scores of Level 3 or above in the Target Language and Level 2 or above in English.

Clearance: Must be able to pass a background check.
