Job summary

POSCO AAPC in McCalla, AL seeks a Shift Manager for the heavy gauge coil slitting line. You will oversee production, quality, safety, and attendance on your shift, guiding operators and coordinating with maintenance and production management.

Responsibilities

• Set up the slitting line for each production run, determining knife clearance and shim configuration.
• Supervise line tensions during setup and operation for accurate slitting across coil weights (0.5–4.5 tons).
• Assign daily tasks to operators and supervise shift floor operations to meet production targets.
• Perform quality inspections at start, middle, and end of runs; record slit width, camber, burr, and surface condition.
• Coordinate with maintenance on preventive maintenance and knife wear/re-sharpening schedules.
• Ensure OSHA safety, proper PPE use, and Lockout/Tagout procedures on shift.
• Reconcile coil identity (stainless or regular steel) and load coil accordingly.
• Thread coils through slitter head and crop non-complying material.
• Use production reporting system to ensure data accuracy.
• Direct Operators/Helpers on staging coils for maximum efficiency considering size/weight.
• Safely operate forklift and overhead crane for material handling and transport.
• Use precision tools (tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, calipers) accurately.
• Cross-train the Machine Operator and Helper.
• Maintain a clean and safe workplace applying 5S principles.
• Ensure quality inspections are performed consistently and document labeling before loading/unloading.
• Lock out all areas around the slitter and manage blade dangers; report mechanical malfunctions.
• Coordinate scheduling and production management for the Heavy gauge line.
• Other duties as instructed by Production Manager/Plant Director.

The Shift Manager is responsible for the production, quality, safety, employee disciplinary, and attendance management for their designated shift on the heavy gauge line.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

1. Set up the slitting line for each production run, determining the optimal knife clearance and shim configuration based on the specifications of the incoming raw material (thickness, width, and grade).
2. Supervise and control line tension settings during setup and operation to ensure stable, accurate slitting across the full range of coil weights handled on the line (0.5 to 4.5 tons).
3. Assign daily work tasks to operators and helpers and directly supervise shift floor operations to ensure the shift’s production targets are met.
4. Perform precision quality inspections at the start, middle, and end of each production run to prevent slit-width tolerance errors, camber, burr, and surface scratches:
   • Checking and recording slit width, camber, burr, and surface condition throughout the process
   • Adjusting machine setup to correct defects as needed during the slitting process
   • Communicating non-compliant production to management and/or the Lead Slitter Operator
5. Coordinate with the maintenance team on preventive maintenance of slitting equipment, including monitoring knife wear and managing the knife re-sharpening/regrinding schedule.
6. Supervise compliance with OSHA safety regulations, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures on the shift.
7. Reconcile coil identity (stainless or regular steel) for production and load coil.
8. Thread coil through slitter head, cropping non-complying material.
9. Use of production reporting system to ensure accuracy of data.
10. Direct Operator/Helper on how to stage coils to be processed for maximum efficiency, accounting for the size and weight of heavy gauge coils.
11. Safely operate a forklift to stage and store material and overhead crane to transport coils to packaging.
12. Use precision when operating tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, and calipers.
13. Cross-train the Machine Operator and Helper.
14. Maintain a clean and safe workplace by applying the 5S (sort, straighten, shine, standardize and sustain working area).
15. Ensure quality inspections are being done consistently, take photos of the label, sides & front before loading and unloading the line.
16. Demonstrate the ability to properly lock out all areas of the slitter and dangers associated with working around the machine’s blades and knife sections.
17. Notify management of mechanical malfunctions.
18. Coordinate scheduling and production management for the Heavy gauge line.
19. Other duties as instructed by the Production Manager/Plant Director.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience operating 0.5 to 4.5 ton coil slitting lines. Must be capable of operating high-tension recoilers and performing both manual and robotic knife setup, with demonstrated expertise in handling heavy-gauge coils.

Computer Skills: Ability to learn computer skills.

Other Skills: Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repairs, and maintenance. Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, and quality control. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, multitasking, and time management skills.

Certifications: Forklift and Overhead Crane Certification

Materials Processed: Hot Rolled (HR), Cold Rolled (CR), Hot-Dip Galvanized (GI), Electro-Galvanized (EG), Stainless Steel (STS), Plate, and other heavy-gauge coil products.
