Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description
This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include, but is not limited to, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, rollers, and/or excavators.
Principle Responsibilities/Accountability
- Operates all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Performs daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Interacts with construction laborers and crew members to facilitate equipment alignment, movement, and adjustment to meet grade specifications.
- Interacts courteously and respectfully with the public, noting and reporting any complaints.
- Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled or required.
- Ensures heavy equipment is stored safely and securely.
- Advises the Foreman of any maintenance or repair needs.
- Participates in routine maintenance.
- Practices workplace safety and maintains inventory.
- Ensures access to houses and locations, maintains easements, and performs seasonal road maintenance.
- Uses equipment for snow removal and road leveling to ensure proper drainage.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- 1-2 years of experience with construction tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of operation of heavy machinery such as front-end loaders, dozers, graders, excavators.
- Understanding of road construction and maintenance techniques.
- Knowledge of signaling used to operate construction machinery.
- Familiarity with equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
- Working knowledge of Oil and Gas Industry operations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and manuals.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams.
- Flexibility to work various schedules, including nights, weekends, and travel.
Educational and Vocational Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or vocational training.
- Previous construction experience or equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Driver's License
- GFS Heavy Equipment Operator Certification
Work Environment
While performing duties, employees frequently use hands, stand, reach, talk, hear, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vehicles, and extreme outdoor temperatures is common.
