Under limited supervision, this position performs skilled work in the operation of various types of heavy machinery, street maintenance functions, and tree trimming. This position also performs manual skilled labor tasks, conducts equipment maintenance, may act as a crew leader over assigned crew and follow safety procedures.
  1. Operates a variety of heavy equipment including but not limited to, wheel loader, skid loader, street sweeper, asphalt spreader, high ranger, backhoe, forklift to accomplish assigned construction and maintenance tasks..
  2. Conducts street maintenance tasks including but not limited to, asphalt repair and replacement, crack filling, concrete and curb work , repair and grading of dirt streets, placing and removing traffic control devices and signs.
  3. Assists in the repairs, fabrication and installation of bridge railings, guardrails, fences, and similar structures.
  4. Serves as lead worker during snow plowing operations using heavy-duty truck, including salting roads and bridges.
  5. Performs various ground maintenance duties such as tree and stump removal, planting and maintenance of new trees and shrubbery, brush chipping.
  6. Operates a variety of support equipment including dump trucks, pickup trucks, packer trucks, asphalt roller, air compressor and air tools, street sweeper, leaf vac, pavement saws, sand blaster, chipper, load-all, trailers and related equipment.
  7. Completes work in elevated areas, including under bridges.
  8. Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment.
  9. Assists with identification of equipment needed for each assigned job.
  10. Conducts pre-operation safety inspections of all assigned vehicles and equipment; oversees a secondary inspection for crew equipment.
  11. Responds to basic citizen inquiries encountered in the field or refers them to a supervisor.
  12. When assigned as a lead worker, is responsible to the foreman for ensuring the crew completes assigned tasks efficiently and effectively.
  13. Promotes and enforces safety by ensuring proper procedures and equipment are used. Identifies unsafe conditions or practices and communicates recommended corrective actions to both the crew and supervisor.
  14. Performs seasonal tasks such as brush removal, recycling/waste complaints, and compost site operations.
  15. Assists with Traffic Maintenance tasks as assigned.
  16. Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned.

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience operating heavy equipment and performing general construction/maintenance work.
  3. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group (A) with airbrakes and N (Tank) endorsement.
  4. Knowledge of preventative maintenance and the operation of various heavy equipment.
  5. Ability to operate equipment under various conditions and in different terrains
  6. Familiarity with the City of Saginaw’s street system with the capacity to navigate roadways with limited direction or ability to learn quickly.
  7. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and complete assignment with minimal supervision. .
  8. Strong judgement, initiative, and ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  9. Ability to follow and comply with safety regulations.
  10. Experience leading or mentoring less experienced staff is a plus.
  11. Acceptable attendance record as determined by management.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to handle or operate tools and equipment.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to operate heavy machinery and vehicles for extended periods.
  • Requires visual acuity sufficient for operation of equipment, reading gauges and documents, and performing repairs (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Requires hearing and speech ability sufficient to communicate clearly and effectively in person and over radio or telephone.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish colors and judge distances for safe operation of vehicles and machinery.
  • Work is regularly performed in outdoor settings with exposure to a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Regular exposure to loud noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and moving mechanical parts.
  • May occasionally work in high precarious places such as under bridges or inside enclosed vehicles.
  • May be exposed to hazardous substances or chemicals, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided.
