Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain highways on the ROW Clearing Crew. You will operate motor graders, front end loaders, tractors with ditchers, and slope mowers, performing manual tasks to support drainage, patching, and paving projects.

Responsibilities include directing traffic in work zones, assisting during emergencies, and complying with safety regulations.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as motor grader, front end loader, tractor with ditcher, and slope mower on the ROW Clearing Crew.
• Perform road maintenance tasks including drainage cleaning, ditching, patching potholes, base repairs, paving driveways, and laying pipes and bricks/blocks.
• Set up and manage traffic controls in work zones, including flagging for safety of crew and public.
• Assist in emergency/inclement weather operations and be on call for after-hour emergencies.
