Job summary

The City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to install, repair, and maintain stormwater systems, roads, and rights‑of‑way. You’ll operate backhoes, dump trucks, graders, and other heavy equipment, supporting construction and emergency response to safeguard public infrastructure.

This non-exempt role requires a high school diploma or GED and CDL A with tanker endorsement.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1+ years of experience operating backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber‑tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other equipment.
• Unrestricted Class A CDL (or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment), Tanker Endorsement.
• Additional Requirements: Stormwater Miner Certification (or ability to obtain within one year); Forklift certification if operating a forklift.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment (backhoes, graders, dump trucks, loaders, excavators, vacuum trucks, bulldozers) on construction and maintenance projects.
• Perform work on storm drainage systems, creeks, ditches, streets, parks, and rights‑of‑way.
• Complete concrete work, truck driving, jackhammering, creek stabilization, tree removal, and minor repairs.
• Inspect and maintain assigned equipment; perform safety checks and lubrication; support extended hours and emergency calls.
