The City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to install, repair, and maintain stormwater systems, roads, and rights‑of‑way. You’ll operate backhoes, dump trucks, graders, and other heavy equipment, supporting construction and emergency response to safeguard public infrastructure.

This non-exempt role requires a high school diploma or GED and CDL A with tanker endorsement.

Competenze

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1+ years of experience operating backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber‑tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other equipment.
• Unrestricted Class A CDL (or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment), Tanker Endorsement.
• Additional Requirements: Stormwater Miner Certification (or ability to obtain within one year); Forklift certification if operating a forklift.

About the Role:

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you’ll operate and maintain heavy equipment to construct, repair, and service City- and State‑maintained stormwater systems, roads, and rights-of-way. This hands‑on role combines equipment operation, construction, routine maintenance, and emergency response to support the reliability and safety of public infrastructure.

Key responsibilities include:

• Operating heavy equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, dump trucks, rubber‑tire loaders, track excavators, vacuum trucks (Vactor trucks), and bulldozers for construction and maintenance projects.
• Performing work involving storm drainage systems, creeks, ditches, streets, parks, and rights-of-way.
• Completing additional construction and maintenance tasks, including concrete work, truck driving, jackhammering, creek bank maintenance, tree removal, and other minor repairs.
• Operating hand and power tools, including grease machines, chainsaws, and pole saws.
• Participating in seasonal operations, such as loose‑leaf collection, and emergency response activities, including snow and ice operations and storm debris removal.
• Inspecting and maintaining assigned heavy equipment through routine lubrication, cleaning, and other safety‑related maintenance tasks.
• Supporting project needs through extended work hours, emergency call‑ins, and nontraditional schedules as required.

This position is Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED, with1+ years of experience operating backhoes, motor graders, track excavators, bulldozers, rubber‑tire loaders, dump trucks, vactor trucks, and other specialized equipment.
• Unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (Or the ability to obtain within 120 days of employment), Tanker Endorsement
• Additional Requirements:
  • If assigned to Stormwater -- Miner Certification ("Or" the ability to obtain within one year of hire date)
  • If operating a forklift, Forklift Operator's License will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Class A or B Commercial Driver's License;
• Class A or B CDL with Tanker Endorsement
• Experience reading and interpreting route maps.
• Experience with concrete work, truck driving, jackhammering, creek stabilization, tree removal, and general construction activities.
