We are seeking a Railroad Heavy Equipment Operator. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining heavy machinery used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of railroad tracks and related infrastructure. This role requires strong mechanical skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of a mobile field crew in outdoor environments and variable conditions.
Description
We are seeking a Railroad Heavy Equipment Operator. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining heavy machinery used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of railroad tracks and related infrastructure. This role requires strong mechanical skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of a mobile field crew in outdoor environments and variable conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate various types of heavy equipment used in railroad construction and maintenance, including but not limited to:
- Excavators
- Ballast regulators
- Backhoes
- Track loaders
- Bulldozers
- Tampers
- Assist in laying, aligning, replacing, and maintaining track infrastructure such as ties, rails, and ballast.
- Perform daily inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment.
- Load and unload equipment at job sites and transport machinery when necessary.
- Follow all federal (FRA), state, and company safety regulations and procedures.
- Work in coordination with other crew members to complete projects on time and within safety standards.
- Operate hand and power tools when not operating machinery.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and equipment usage.
- Travel extensively to various job sites, including overnight and out-of-town assignments.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction, transportation, or railroad settings.
- Working knowledge of railroad track structure and safety practices preferred.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, bend, stoop, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL a plus.
- Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on a flexible schedule (nights, weekends, holidays).
- Must pass drug screening, physical, and meet company safety and security requirements.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with FRA and OSHA safety regulations.
- Experience with rail-bound equipment.
- Basic mechanical or diesel engine repair knowledge.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
